Frequently Asked Questions

How can I help?

Bring us your donations, and stop in here first before heading to a big box store! So many times we purchase items for limited use. Lets keep these items circulating through our communities!

Are you a non-profit?

We do not currently have non-profit status, but hope to transition to non-profit within three years. We do donate a significant portion of our gross sales to individuals, families, and organizations in our community!

Can I donate when if you are closed?

We ask that you do not leave donations outside of our store. We do have a large donation drop box located at the back of the building that you can put donations at any time. These donations are collected by us, and brought in to the store to be shared.

How is Free to Thrift different from other thrift stores

We are not solely operating to raise funds for charity or profit. A significant part of our mission is to keep goods and resources circulating for use within our community. We call it sharecycling or wecycling! That means that you will always find items in our store are priced to go to free!

What items are free?

We are able to offer the following items for free ALL of the time
Baby clothes and accessories (under 12mos)
Craft supplies
Fabric
Many items across all sections that have been in the store for less than 1 month

Don't all thrift stores sharecycle, or wecycle?

Unfortunately, the short answer is no. The majority of thrift stores operate as non-profits but within a capitalist business model where goods are viewed primarily through their monetary value x turnover rate. When conditions put limits on storage space, or there are limits of time(shopping hours) or customers , the stores have to make decisions about what to do with the excess. What people don't realize is this results in significant proportions of donations being disposed of, or shipped overseas. Many still end up in landfills.

What do you do with excess goods?

We are hoping that by selling goods that are in high demand, we can cover our business expenses, and provide for the livelihoods of our employees. By pricing items to go to free, we are hopeful that customers will seek free items with us first before pursuing purchasing new at box stores, or discount chain stores. Any fiber items that are no longer usable are sent to helpsy for recycling.

How is this sustainable?

The short answer is I don't know.
This store is an experiment, and so it will grow and change and respond to conditions over time in novel and dynamic ways.
Because we have the freedom to do that, we hope to be able to craft it into a structure of service that is sustainable. Please be patient with us as we iron out all the moving pieces, as we aim to provide our community with a service that will benefit us all, and with time we feel certain we can achieve it!

How does pricing work?

We have adapted some of the methods of other popular thrift stores for our use!
Each week new merchandise will be tagged with unique color. This allows us to discount in color groups.
Ex. red is full price, blue is 25% off, green 50% off pink 75% off, and yellow is free. The discount for each color WILL change weekly!
All clothes have base prices, while household goods and accessories are priced individually.

Why aren't white tag items discounted?

We want to be sure to put respect on the name of rare, handmade, or artistic pieces, and are happy to take a longer time to help these pieces find their new homes. Not to mention, they bring beauty while they're with us, and we enjoy them!
We've also found that we can provide useful items to people at better prices if we give a little more time. Nevertheless, if an item has been in store for a couple months we will then give it away for free.

What are your terms and conditions?

We do not offer refunds, or accept returns. If you decide you no longer need an item, we ask that you donate it back to us or another thrift store!
Every person is welcome to shop for $150 worth of free clothes and accessories weekly!

How much do you give away?

We have found that approximately 40-50% of all of the donations that we receive are passed on to others for Free!
